Health and Exercise

Exercise

Regular physical activity is key to a long and healthy life. Exercise helps lower risk factors for common diseases associated with aging, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that older adults perform moderate-intensity exercise (e.g. brisk walking) for at least two-and-a-half hours each week and muscle-strengthening activity two or more times per week.

Our extremely popular exercise class is open to any senior interested in improving his or her physical fitness. Concentrating on four specific goals – improved cardiovascular health, endurance, strength training, and balance – our class meets every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11:30am. We encourage seniors of all fitness levels to join and the class is tailored to those in wheelchairs or who prefer to exercise seated in a chair.

Yoga

Sarah’s Circle offers yoga every Monday and Thursday at 11:30am, perfect for newcomers and yoga aficionados alike. Our yoga class has been designed for all ability levels and is enjoyed by people in wheelchairs and those who prefer to exercise while seated. Yoga is key to improving strength, muscle tone, balance, and flexibility and can be a key factor in helping seniors recover more quickly from accident or injury.

Meditation

We offer two separate meditation programs: a guided meditation facilitated by a reiki practitioner and a meditation and movement class (similar to tai chi) provided by our partners at Unity Health Care. For more information about specific dates and times, please check our monthly program calendar.

Health Services

While Sarah’s Circle serves only those who are able to live independently, we also offer an array of education and wellness services to keep our seniors healthy. Every Tuesday morning, we offer a wellness clinic staffed by our nursing intern from Marymount University. Our nurse provides routine health screenings, one-on-one advice on disease prevention and health management, and group sessions covering a variety of wellness topics. Adoption of good health habits is key to remaining independent despite advancing age, and our goal is to equip our seniors with what they need to continue to successfully age in place.
